Ventilation Solutions for Radon Gas Mitigation in Buildings

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can accumulate inside buildings and pose health risk to occupants. Its presence makes it necessary to implement measures to prevent it from entering from the ground and reduce its concentration in occupied spaces.

SODECA offers ventilation solutions for radon gas mitigation, designed to reduce exposure and improve indoor air quality in residential and commercial buildings, both in new constructions and existing buildings.

What is radon gas and what are its health risks?

Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the ground and can enter buildings through cracks, gaps, construction joints and service ducts. Once inside, it can accumulate, particularly in basements, ground floors and other areas close to the ground.

Prolonged exposure to radon increases the risk of developing lung cancer. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), radon is one of the leading causes of lung cancer, highlighting the importance of implementing appropriate protection measures in buildings.

In Spain, the Technical Building Code (CTE), through Basic Document HS 6: Protection against Radon Exposure, establishes measures to limit the entry of radon into buildings, using an annual average concentration of 300 Bq/m³ as a reference level.

In workplaces, Royal Decree 1029/2022 establishes requirements for measuring radon concentrations in certain working environments and implementing corrective measures when the reference level is exceeded.

Ventilation solutions to reduce radon gas concentrations

Ventilation plays a fundamental role in radon mitigation, as it allows action to be taken both before and after the gas enters buildings.

SODECA offers a range of solutions adapted to the requirements of each installation, including ventilation of containment spaces, ground depressurisation, pressurisation of occupied spaces and indoor air renewal.

These strategies help reduce radon concentrations and limit its entry from the ground. They also facilitate the implementation of protection measures established in CTE DB HS 6, contributing to compliance with regulatory requirements when systems are designed and installed in accordance with the applicable conditions.

RD/LINE/EC: Energy-efficient ventilation for radon gas mitigation

Among SODECA's solutions is the RD/LINE/EC, a unit developed for the ventilation of containment spaces and ground depressurisation, two strategies designed to reduce radon entry into buildings.

In ground depressurisation systems, mechanical extraction creates negative pressure in the ground, allowing radon gas to be collected and extracted before it enters occupied spaces. Ventilation of containment spaces, meanwhile, reduces radon accumulation in air cavities or crawl spaces located between the ground and the building.

RD/LINE/EC units incorporate EC Technology motors, which contribute to the energy efficiency of the ventilation system. They also feature a compact design and high airtightness, with leakage rates below 0.25%, particularly relevant characteristics for these applications.

The units are also suitable for outdoor installation, offer high performance and facilitate installation and maintenance, adapting to the specific requirements of each project.

Radon protection and improved indoor air quality

Radon gas mitigation requires solutions adapted to the construction characteristics of each building and its exposure conditions. In this context, ventilation systems help reduce radon concentrations and protect building occupants.

With solutions such as the RD/LINE/EC, SODECA provides ventilation equipment for implementing radon mitigation strategies, helping to improve indoor air quality and meet applicable building regulatory requirements.
